Top 5 Design Trends of 2022

As we’ve entered our third year of a global pandemic, how we live in our homes has shifted over the last couple years. More people are working from home, homeschooling, cooking, and just all around spending more time in their abodes. With adjusting our lifestyles, interior design trends adjust with it. Here are some of the design trends I’ve been spotting that I think will make a big impact in our homes in the coming year.

1. All the Curves

I’m seeing furniture and architecture trending toward curves. In 2021 arches were popular and they continue to be a favorite. The windows, the boulcé sofa (this fabric is also very in at the moment), the waterfall coffee table, the curves on the console table—all gorgeous! This brings in a nice softness to the last decade of angular mid-century modern design.

2. Layering of Old and New

Because people are spending more time in their homes now, a lot of people are ready for a more maximalist approach. We want to be surrounded by our things that give us comfort, and I think there is a comfort in the familiarity of old things. Floral patterns on a chair, your grandmother’s chest in the corner, vintage-style rugs and blankets to give a space a sense of history and character. Blending old and new pieces is one of my favorite ways to make a space feel interesting and engaging.

3. Shades of Green

The color green is finally having it’s day (or year!). Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-William selected hues of green for their 2022 color of the year, not to mention I’ve seen it all over furniture, fabrics, clothing, and home decor accessories. Plants are an easy, health boosting way to bring some green into your home. Adding in a shade of green to your space helps to connect to the soothing feeling of nature and outdoors.

4. Leaning Into Natural Materials

Similar to shades of green being popular, natural materials remind us of the calming attributes of nature. A rattan light fixture adds warmth and a wool rug gives some texture to a room. Linen and linen-looking fabrics have increased in popularity in recent years, especially with performance fabrics becoming more widely available.

5. Luxury Bedding is a Yes

When life is feeling uncertain, bed is wonderful spot to relax, rest, and recharge. And when you can introduce a little bit of luxury in your life, bedding is where I would recommend to upgrade. You spend so much of your life in bed so it should be comfortable. I am all about a cozy space to retreat at the end of a long day. If you go for only one thing, make sure to buy a high quality sleeping pillow—that will never go out of style!
